15 Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty
The Review Conference for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty will be
held at the United Nations in New York from 2 - 27 May 2005.
BACKGROUND ON THE NPT
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was brought into force in 1970
and has been signed by 188 countries, including Australia. The NPT calls
for the elimination of nuclear weapons and is a key disarmament treaty.
Parties to the NPT meet every five years to review the implementation of
the objectives of the Treaty at a Review Conference.
The Review Conference being held in May in New York will run over four
weeks and is attended by representatives from all member states, including
the Australian government.
